Ann & Ailis Healy (Co. Wicklow)

Run Campaignlaunch“The thing is that people don’t realise how limiting the lack of Changing Places facilities in Ireland actually is. People think anybody can use a disabled toilet, but that’s not the case. Some people can use the disabled toilets if they are able to transfer from the wheelchair to the toilet by themselves or with help.”

“However, Ailis is totally dependent on a hoist and like all young women her age she loves to go out to lunch, shop and do all that sort of thing. But she needs a hoist to use the bathroom so her life is limited.”

“She has a free bus pass but she can never use it because if you got the bus from Blessington in Wicklow into Dublin you’d have to get the next one back because there are no bathrooms.”

“You couldn’t go out for a weekend because the facilities aren’t there. It does restrict life for both of us. If the other people in her centre are going out as a group, they always have to go according to her needs, so they’re restricted as well.”

Gillian & Christa Asche Phillips-Brown (Co. Meath)

“My daughter Christa Asche is 15 years of age and has an extremely rare genetic condition called Angelman Syndrome which has denied her a voice and her mobility and has inflicted her with severe epilepsy, sleep disturbance and a profound developmental delay.”

“But this has done nothing to undermine her bravery, strength of character and sheer love of life and the people around her – in short, she is the best person that I know.”

“Like other parents, I have fought tooth and nail to ensure that she is treated fairly, respected and included in the world; a world where she has so very much to offer.”

“Being in a wheelchair brings an additional level of exclusion whether it’s going to the supermarket, the pharmacy or the cinema. Precision timing is required to allow enough time to get my daughter home in time to be changed and freshened.”

“And despite all the different places that we regularly visit in the community, one thing remains the same: there are no proper fully accessible toilet facilities. Christa Asche requires a changing table and hoist to manoeuvre her in and out of her wheelchair – which is no mean feat for a Mammy who only stands 5ft 2ins and a teenage daughter who is well on her way to being 5ft 10ins.”

“Every wheelchair user wants to do the same things as everybody else including going to sporting events, the cinema, shopping centres and exercising, swimming and going to the gym.”

“But without Changing Places facilities, these activities are almost impossible.”

Avril & Matthew Walsh-Evans (Dublin)

“My son, Matthew, is 11 years old. He has a very rare genetic disorder which, among other problems, means that he is a wheelchair user and incontinent.”

“Matthew is a social, outgoing little boy and he loves to be out and about seeing the world, but this has become a lot more difficult for him as he has got bigger.”

“There are very few places with suitable bathroom and changing facilities. Matthew needs space for his wheelchair, needs to be hoisted and would only be comfortable on a large, safe changing bed.”

“We are very restricted with day trips as Matthew needs to be changed every three to four hours.”

“I refuse the indignity of lying Matthew on dirty toilet floors – but have been forced to use the backseat of the car, provided I have somebody to help lift him.”

“I fully support the Changing Places Ireland campaign and I will never stop trying to make Ireland a more dignified and accessible place for Matthew.”

Mary & Olivia Pyne (Co. Clare)

“My daughter Olivia is aged 17 years and has cerebral palsy, her physical disabilities are quite severe and she is a wheelchair user.”

“However, she is a very sociable happy girl who loves to be out and about and while cruelly limited in many respects through no fault of her own, her late father and I always sought to make her life as full and happy as possible by encouraging the social side of her personality.”

“However, as Olivia gets older this has become more difficult due to the lack of accessible Changing Places facilities in Ireland.”

“She is unable to transfer to a disabled toilet and instead she has to be changed while lying on a bench preferably with the aid of a hoist.”

“As these facilities are not available in Ireland and she is obviously now too big to use the baby changing unit, her opportunities to socialise are becoming more and more curtailed. This is very sad.”

“She loves bowling, going to the cinema and shopping, visiting cafes with her friends, attending concerts and swimming and travelling.”

“The only way I can manage to bring her to these activities as if I am prepared to place her on a floor to change her and then lift her manually from the floor to her wheelchair. This is undignified, unhygienic and dangerous.”
